Discover the San Juan Islands

Discover the beauty and diversity of the San Juan Islands on this 7-day, 6 night cruise. You'll visit remote islands with unique landscapes and enjoy quiet evenings in secluded anchorages. Each day you'll spend time spend ashore hiking on trails, visiting small island towns and gently kayaking in calm protected waters*.

Day 1 - Bellingham to Sucia Island

Board the David B at 9:00 am in Bellingham, Washington. You will have plenty of time to stow your belongings before gathering with the crew for an orientation of the boat and safety meeting. At 10:00 am the boat will leave the harbor and cruise through Bellingham Bay to our first night's anchorage at Sucia Island where you'll spend the afternoon kayaking along the fascinating sandstones of Echo Bay.

Day 2 - Sucia Island to Stuart Island

After breakfast you'll have plenty of time to spend exploring the trails of Sucia Island. You can go on your own or take a guided walk with your host Christine as she shares her knowlege of the fossils, plants, birds and inter-tidal creatures of the island. Once back on board the David B you'll have lunch underway as the David B cruises to Stuart Island's Reid Harbor. We'll drop anchor in the early evening and you'll have time for reading a good book on deck or taking one of the kayaks for an easy paddle.

Day 3 - Stuart Island to Double Island

In the morning we'll visit Stuart Island's one-room schoolhouse and museum where visitors frequently buy t-shirts and greeting cards made by island residents. After a stop at the schoolhouse, we'll to continue across the island to the Turn Point Lighthouse. This historic lighthouse was built in 1893. The lighthouse is now maintained by the Turn Point Lighthouse Preservation Society and is used by whale researchers to document the movements of orca whales. In the afternoon the David B will get underway for Double Island. Here you'll have the chance to kayak with Christine or Capt. Jeffrey to Skull Island in Oracs Island's Westsound.

Day 4 - Double Island to Lopez Island

We'll raise anchor in the morning and have breakfast underway as we head for Lopez Island. Once on Lopez you'll be outfitted with bicycles for an easy self-guided bike ride on the San Juan Island's friendliest island. Lopez is a mostly flat pastoral island with 33 miles of country road to ride on. Highlights of this day include a stop at the Lopez Island Vineyards and Lopez Village. At the end of the day the David B will raise anchor again and head down island to Mackaye Harbor for the night.

Day 5 - Lopez Island to Port Townsend and Scow Bay, Marrostone Island

We'll leave our anchorage early and have breakfast underway. As we head out into the Straits of Juan de Fuca on our way to Port Townsend we'll keep our eyes open of orca whales. Port Townsend is a vibrant arts community with many galleries to look though as you stroll through this once busy port named by Captain George Vancouver. After spending the afternoon at Port Townsend, we'll cruise to our evening's anchorage in quiet Scow Bay.

Day 6 - Scow Bay, Marrowstone Island to Garrison Bay, San Juan Island

In the morning you'll have some time to head to the shore for a walk before we raise anchor and head back out into the Straits of Juan de Fuca and up Haro Strait and the Westside of San Juan Island for the possibility of more whale watching. Our last night's anchorage is in Garrison Bay on San Juan Island and the site of the Pig War. This year is the Sesquicentennial of the Pig War and we'll be anchored in Garrison Bay for the annual encampment commemorating the Pig War with demonstations of life in the 1850s and a candlelight ball in the evening.

Day 7 - Garrison Bay, San Juan Island to Bellingham

For your last morning on the David B you'll be treated to hand-made croissants with real butter. After breakfast you'll have time to enjoy an easy hike up Mount Young with panoramic views of Haro Strait and Vancouver Island. You'll return to the boat for lunch and we'll get underway for Bellingham with a comfortable cruise through the heart of the San Juan Islands.
