What EXACTLY is stopping you from completing your Bucket List?

So many times I hear,  “oh, your trip is on my Bucket List “ and although I understand the idea of the Bucket List, I also think it’s a huge way for people to avoid doing things outside of their comfort zone. The idea, if you haven’t heard of it, is to have a list of things you plan to do before you die. The problem is that it’s easy to follow your normal pattern,  easy to do the everyday routine. If you claim it’s on your List, then you can just keep on with your regular schedule. But what’s that really for?

Captain Jeffrey and Christine’s Bucket List

Before the recession, people who made a big journey or vacation had saved up to do it for an average of seven years. Seven years! That’s dedication to checking something off your bucket list. I’m not sure how that compares to today, but I don’t think people mean that they are putting money in their savings when they talk about their bucket list. I think it’s become an idle thing to say. Now you can say it and really mean that you’d love to have an adventure, go on a journey, drive a race car, jump from an airplane, and not really have any intention of doing it. It covers you so that you can be “too busy” or have “too many commitments” or have “too much work to do” but everyone will know that you thought about it.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea of The List. I think everyone should have one. Here’s the one on our kitchen cabinet. But to make it happen, you have to go from wishing to doing. You have to do things, and work at things so that what you put on that list really comes true  (before the bucket kicking happens.)

One time, when Christine and I were struggling to get the David B rebuilt, I asked my sister for ideas about how to get our dream going. We couldn’t seem to make any progress. Cynthia always has very sage advice, and often helps me when it comes to things like this. She said “What EXACTLY is keeping you from your goal?” Then she went on, “if you know what it is, then you can get it out of your way.” (My older sister is so smart.) But I ask myself that question a lot, and you should too.

If your goal is to see the Galapagos or learn to program a computer of fly a fighter jet or stay at a villa in the Rhone or to watch the Tour de France or drive to Terra del Fuego or to see a Broadway play, what EXACTLY is stopping you? If your goal is to see the Inside Passage on the David B, we’ve just cut our rates so you can really afford it. Make us an offer* if these rates don’t work for you.

What EXACTLY is stopping you?
